Ritualistic Prayer Braids

By: Kristin Peterson (1/9/23)

For those of you with long hair: A new idea that just popped in my head (which I’m sure people have historically done, but something just reconnected that little ancient memory), is to braid your hair with intention and prayers. For each of the three strands, they could stand for a word of intention or prayer for specific people or a specific person and then you can also imagine each strand is a color of the rainbow. I just on this set of braids today had the blue, green, purple together on my left side and the red, orange, yellow on my right side towards prayers of love set out for the world and the people of the world to be Loved, use their Voice, and See and the red, orange and yellow side for Confidence, Balance, Self Love, Abundance, Wellbeing, Pleasure, Sexuality, and Grounded from Survival Issues (had to look up that right side, so then, if you don’t have a chakra meaning memorized off hand, well: maybe those are your issues! Sure struck home to me! 😉) It’s a cool new idea that was passed on to me to do something meaningful while you braid your hair and ground yourself to the Earth. Afterwards, I went outside and stood with my bare feet on the ground and imagined the Earth sending energy starting with red as the root up through to the top in each next harmony and then I held my competed braid on one side and reaffirmed the intention and then did the same for the other side and then I received that from the Earth so then I imagined sending that same light back through and back into her, like a symbiotic relationship, like the infinity sign almost with the hair criss crossed to be held in opposite hand when praying. It was really nice and now I feel like I’m ready to take these vibes out for a night on the town! Giddyap, Pony People!

PS: Info shared with my after I wrote and shared this: Looks like there’s a book called “Braiding Sweetgrass” all about this! I love it!
